TUCKER was pulled from the Wayne County Humane Society in Wooster, Oh. the day he was to be euthanized. Star-Mar pulled him on Feb. 21st and on Monday Feb. 25, xxxx Tucker was delivered to the Goodwill Service Dogs Program to begin training to become a service dog and hopefully be the bridge to a more normal life for some lucky person. We are sharing this information on our petfinder page in order to emphasize the wonderful dogs that are being euthanized every single day across this county. We need to work together to find a better way. We have accepted the belief that there is no other way but to kill our unwanted pet population. Well, there is: through spay/neuter programs for every dog adopted from a shelter, humane society or rescue, through responsible pet education, through networking by our shelters and with a commitment to save every dog we can, we WILL change this. Read the book Redemption by Nathan Winogard. Although Star-Mar does not agree with all of Mr. Winograd's ideas, shelters that do not kill for space are a reality. Please encourage your local pound/shelter/humane society to find a better way to deal with American's unwanted pet problem. Educate yourself on how you can help. Consider where you donate or volunteer. There will be no change without you, so make a difference! It's time for all of us pet lovers to come together and work for change. UPDATE: Tucker has been placed as a service companion dog with a gentleman with Alzheimer's. This was a perfect fit - Jim has a dog to care for and and Tucker has a job! UPDATE: Jan. '09, Tucker's family was chosen as the Alzheimer's Family of the Year in Northeast Ohio. Tucker received high marks for being the one thing that his owner never forgets to take care. Jim's wife says that she has much support from friends and family and that Tucker is Jim's support. Tucker and Jim serve as a reminder to all that there is a strong bond between dog and human. There are thousands and thousands of service dogs in this country that give their lives to make their human's life safer, more comfortable, more enjoyable and yet we kill millions of them a year. We need to find a better way - we all need to be a part of the change. Ask yourself what you can do and then DO IT!
